Singer, songwriter, guitarist, political activist, iconoclast: Neil Young is a lot of things, but first and foremeost, he's rock 'n' roll royalty. Born in Toronto in 1945, Young spent his early years performing in the city's growing rock and blues scene, eventually hooking up with Rick James' outfit the Mynah Birds. But when James was arrested for being AWOL from the Navy, Young and his friend Bruce Palmer hocked their equipment, bought a Pontiac herse, and headed for California. A chance encounter with Stephen Stills and Richie Furay in the city's famous traffic congestion led to the formation of Buffalo Springfield, a short-lived but incredibly influential rock band that channeled the era's restlessness and eagerness for change.
After Buffalo Springfield broke up in 1968, Young briefly pursued a solo career with his backing band Crazy Horse, before teaming back up with Stephen Stills in Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. The same tensions that had plagued Buffalo Springfield cropped back up again with CSNY, but again yielded some of the most vibrant and important rock and roll of the era — or any era, for that fact. This turmoil led Young to gradually transition back to solo work, which led to his breakout solo album After the Gold Rush in 1970; he soon followed it up with 1972's Harvest, another instant classic. These records established Young as a brilliant solo artist as well as a talented voice in a collaborative context, and encouraged him to focus on solo work for the rest of his career.
