You heard it through the grapevine, classic soul fans: Gladys Knight is back on tour in 2025, and she's coming to a venue near you soon! Born and raised in Atlanta, GA, Gladys — backed by her siblings and cousins, under the name the Pips — was signed to Motown Records following the success of their regional hit "Every Beat of My Heart." The group notched a series of hits while in Detroit, including the first version of Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," though they were consistently relegated to a supporting role by label boss Berry Gordy, Jr., who had them opening for Diana Ross and the Supremes throughout the later part of the '60s. Eager to spread their wings, Gladys and the Pips signed to Buddah Records in 1973 and immediately had a hit with their first LP for the label, Imagination, which included the #1 single "Midnight Train to Georgia." They spent the rest of the decade as one of the biggest names in soul and gospel, and Gladys herself earned the honorific "The Empress of Soul" in recognition of her prodigious talents.
