Formed in San Jose in 1970, The Doobie Brothers began life as an R&B-influenced rock band beloved of the Hells Angels — a far cry from the laidback blue-eyed soul collective they'd morph into in a few short years. While they never lost the energy or verve of their hellraising early days, the addition of former Steely Dan guitarist Jeff "Skunk" Baxter in 1974 and honey-voiced singer Michael McDonald two years later took the band in a smoother direction — one that resulted in many of their most beloved hits. Now, nearly 50 years after their formation, they remain one of the best live bands in classic rock, their easygoing blend of blues, R&B, and pop continuing to pack the stands wherever they play.
