Darius Rucker's career has been one of reinvention.  The Charleston-born singer/songwriter first hit it big as the lead singer and songwriter for Hootie and the Blowfish, which he founded in 1986 at the University of South Carolina with friends Mark Bryan, Jim "Soni" Sonefeld, and Dean Felber.  The band briefly became one of the most popular acts in America on the back of their debut album Cracked Rear View, which was eventually certified 16x Platinum in the United States and Diamond in Canada.  Despite a successful sophomore release, the band was never able to fully capitalize on their massive initial success, and by the early 2000's, the group had gone their separate ways.

 

Rather than be content with his "one hit wonder" status, Rucker decided to embrace Hootie's country influences, melding them with the gospel he grew up listening to in Charleston and creating in the process a new signature sound.  In contrast to the instant and massive success of Hootie and the Blowfish, Darius's solo career has been a slow build towards sustained success — something he's accomplished with his breakout solo record, Southern Style.
