Five Grammy Awards.  Winner of the 1988 Eurovision song contest. 200 million albums.  The highest-grossing residency in Las Vegas history.  Celine Dion isn't just one of the most successful artists of the last 50 years — she's an unstoppable pop-music force!  Famed for her soaring voice and emotional phrasing, she's a tremendously talented singer, and she's lived a fascinating life, too.  Born and raised in the Montreal suburb of Charlemagne, Celine became a star when her manager and future husband René Angélil famously mortgaged his home to pay for her debut album, La voix du bon Dieu.  In 1988, she represented Switzerland in the famed Eurovision song contest, winning the program with the song "Ne partez pas sans moi."

Ironically, it was a concert by the King of Pop that would put her on the path to becoming "Queen Celine."  After seeing Michael Jackson perform live, Dion told Angélil that she wanted to become a major pop star.  He paid to have her teeth straightened and helped craft a new image, one that emphasized glamor and poise as much as her famous three-octave voice.  And perhaps most importantly, she attended classes at Berlitz to improve her English.  The makeover was a success, and in 1990, with the release of her debut English-language album Unison, she was a burgeoning superstar.

The 1990s were the decade in which she went from being a popular regional entertainer to one of the biggest stars on the planet.  Her self-titled 1993 album became a best-seller in both Canada and the United States, and her 1995 release D'eux would become the best-selling French-language album of all time.  And no summary of her career would be complete without "My Heart Will Go On," the single from her 1997 album Let's Talk About Love, which became the theme for the hit movie Titanic and consequently topped charts all over the planet.
